Squiers Manor
Join us at Squiers Manor Bed & Breakfast in the beautiful small town of Maquoketa, Iowa, pronounced [Muh-coke-eht-uh].
(Yes, we do get asked that a lot. “Oh! That’s how you say that.”)
This beautiful historic brick Queen Anne style home was built in 1882 by James Emery Squiers, also known as J.E. Squiers. It was one of the first homes in Maquoketa to have electricity and running water and still features the original cisterns on the property. The Manor was included as a contributing property in the West Pleasant Street Historic district in 1991 and in 1995 was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Rich, handcrafted woodwork through the home lends to the Victorian charm. Decorated with Victorian period antiques throughout the Manor, a person could spend all day simply discovering historic treasures featured in every room. While the home may represent the past, it is not without the comforts of modern times. There is air conditioning throughout the home and each room has its own private bath. Soak in a single or double Jacuzzis with bath salts provided for you in all rooms with a tub. Lounge around in your room with a queen size bed and a television, or if you’re in the Ballroom Suite, enjoy the king size bed, queen size futon and two televisions.
Modern amenities provided for your comfort include shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soaps and make-up remover wipes. The owners have also provided Keurig machines with Star Bucks coffees and teas, and a Cube alarm clock with blue tooth technology to charge your cell phone or listen to music. Along with these comforts of home, you will also find chocolates in your room, cookies and fresh fruit available in the dining room for your snacking needs, and candy for you to enjoy in the Parlor and Library.
After you have checked in and taken the opportunity to unwind in your room, walk the Manor grounds or explore the charming small town of Maquoketa, join us for decadent desserts by candlelight at seven thirty each evening. If you can’t make it at seven thirty, you can still enjoy a sweet treat. Desserts and beverages will be available in the guest fridge off of the dining room for your convenience at any time.
Finally, wake up to the mouthwatering aroma of sweet breads, fresh fruit, egg dishes, sausages or bacon, and Nathan’s Famous Potatoes. Served hot with tea, freshly brewed coffee and juice. We promise guests will not leave hungry after enjoying a delicious five course country breakfast served family style at nine o’clock every morning in the dining room.
You may visit us for the Victorian charm, but you’ll stay for the home made food and come back again for the Midwestern Hospitality. Welcome to Squiers Manor!
